Day one of racing at The 29th annual AMA Loretta Lynn’s Amateur National Championship was loaded with racing action. Early morning motos saw a break in the heat and of course a fresh track. By the afternoon motos, we had seen 100+ temperatures followed by a quick shower and back to the heat. Riders had to face the elements for their first day of racing.

Lowell Spangler #42 getting an amazing jump on the start in Moto 1 of 450 A/Pro Sport. Spangler would lead the pack for about a lap before Nick Pullouzi would take command of the race. Spangler and Audette would battle for second while Pullouzi began to pull away. Nearing the end, Pullouzi would go down handing Audette the moto win and Spangler finishing third.

Spangler defeated after moto 1 but expect more to come out of his week.

Everyone was using umbrellas, cold towels and pit boards as fans trying to beat this heat and attempt to survive their motos.

East coast and NJ rider Luke Renzland #6 represented the northeast very well today in Schoolboy 1 with a solid ride in 4th. The 125 stroke class was very impressive with names like Savatgy, Nichols and A-rod all practically running a train around the course. Both Schoolboy classes should see a lot of action as the week progresses.

Jace Owen #41 got the holeshot and early lead in 85cc 12-14 but would go down leaving AC to charge the moto. Ciancurilio would began to check out and take the moto win.

Broc Schmmelyun, another Northeast ripper would land a solid start and would take advantage of mistakes to end up 3rd in 250 A/Pro Sport. Moto win would go to Jason Anderson as he cruised out front. Behind him you had Spangler and Trettle having problems that Broc would counter on for great ride.

Schoolboy 1 had an upset winner, Luke Renzland, taking the title. Favorites like Joey Savatgy, Colt Nichols and Matt Besceglia could not compare with Luke’s consistency going 4-2-1 for the championship. Savatgy seemed to be plagued with bad starts all week and would work his way up inside the top 5. Even with Nichols moto win, Renzland started up front made the pass early and never looked back to get his first Loretta Lynn’s championship.
Justin Bogle was one of very few to dominate Loretta’s this week going 6 straight in his B classes. Bogle seemed to be effortless on the rough track, in spots he was looking around seeing how big the gap really was. Kyle Peters and Brad Frace were on a mission to get up front but bad starts would really show to be the factor in all the races this week. Frace would set blistering fast laps in just about every race but coming from outside the top 10 he would only let Bogle get away. Favorite Kyle Peters had some inspiring rides this week but some minor errors would turn into huge misses for the championship. Peters, along with many, other would have to sit back and watch Justin Bogle get away.
A classes were uncharacteristically mellow throughout the week. Not to take anything away from their racing but all the guys kept it clean and before half way the racing was spread out. Jacob Hayes showed to be someone to deal with in A. Everything from starts, lap times and that never give up charge really shows that he could be a top name when contracts come around. Jason Anderson had a few dominating motos and with his James Stewart wide open style around the track, he really made for some enjoyable viewing. When the final motos were done, Ian Trettle and Gannon Audette, showed to be the big winners in A and A/Pro Sport.
Girls 14+ had the much awaited battle between Jennifer Burton and Alexah Pearson. It started right off the bat in moto 1 with Burton putting on a clinic getting the holeshot and getting away fast. Moto 2 changed everything with Pearson getting out front early and Burton making a small mistake leaving her with a leg injury. This would pretty much leave it to Pearson, she would go on to win moto 2 and almost take the final moto but a flat would drop her to 2nd. In the end, a 2-1-2 was more than enough for Pearson to take home her much anticipated Championship.
Supermini 1 had the most drama of any class surrounding it. Fresh off a good week at Ponca, Cooper Webb was ready to carry that into Loretta’s. Adam Cianciarulo could not stay off the ground or get the starts to get himself a shot at running down Cooper. It was all up to Dakota Alix and Jace Owen. Almost 6 for 6 these two would drag race each other for the holeshot. With Cooper wrapping up supermini 2, he looked for the supermini sweep. Owen and Alix would make him dig deep all week but Cooper nailing the triple triple after the finish and hauling would set himself up for supermini 1 perfectly. It came down to the last lap of the final moto and only a few corners from the finish where Webb would tangle with a lapper and end up on the bottom of a pile up. He would remount and finish third but, Jace Owen would sneak by to grab 2nd. Owen would go down as the upset winner and a very upset Cooper Webb would have to settle for 2nd overall.

Cody Penwell who finished second gets the holeshot in Supermini 2(14-15) over overall winner Cody Chisholm, Austin Simpson(535), keith Tucker(641), Luke Palonicola(775), and Mason Brown(472).

The rain really came very early Sunday morning. This is the first turn after a couple motos have gone by.
Cullin park has great style for a mini bike rider. He finished 1st in the 50 Open class.
Barry Cartsen does not let off for anyone!
Malcolm Stewart was doing good all weekend finishing second overall in 250 Pro behind Stephen Stella and 4th in Saturdays Open Pro Class only to DNF Sunday. Malcolm even lead Mike Alessi in one moto then when he tried to make an aggressive pass on Cartsen he ironically went down 5 corners later and took him about a lap to get his bike started. Sunday He was leading again only to go down a second to loose his lead in the sand and ended up pulling off giving the overall away to Bard Anderson.

I can't think of a better way to break in the new year than with palm trees, sun, and dirt bikes. This years Florida Winter Am series started today, Janurary 1st with some bar to bar heart pounding practice at Gatorback Cycle park! Actually there wasn't any practice today. On my way to the track the sunshine states skies opened up and poured down on us slowing traffic on I4 down to under 35mph which made me really glad I got those new tires on the back of my truck last weekend. Contemplating weather to continue driving or turn around and start over in the morning I called Gatorback and was notified that practice was canceled for the day, it rained for a total of two hours then stopped.
This weekends forcast looks promising and after checking out a few spots on the track saw that the mudd shouldn't be a big deal and should be gone after practice tomorrow morning.
Currently pitted at the track I noticed Maryland native Stephen Stella who finished with a third place overall in 250 A/Pro Am Stock class at the 2009 Mini O's two months prior along with second place finisher Tevin Tapia.
PA native Kyle Sidle was also pitted at the track who ran the same class at Mini O's as Stella and Tapia but finished out of the top ten. Another PA rider I saw was Nick McPhee pimping around the track in his golf cart. I'm not sure what other racers will be here this round althought I heard some big names may make it to a round or two for meer "practice".
